Symposium Chairs' Biographies

Malte Kaspereit

Malte Kaspereit is professor for Separation Science and Technology at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg. After studying Process Engineering, he worked for more than 10 years at the Max Planck Institute in Magdeburg/Germany. He received his PhD in 2006 from the University of Magdeburg. His experimental and theoretical research aims at developing advanced preparative separations for challenging problems like separations of enantiomers, fine chemicals, proteins and macromolecules, as well as nanoparticles. Particular focus is on adsorptive and chromatographic processes like simulated moving bed, steady-state recycling, or pressure-swing adsorption.

Eric Francotte

Eric Francotte is currently working as an independent scientific advisor in Separations Sciences. During the last 10 years he has been working as an executive Director at Novartis Pharma and was in charge of technology platforms supporting Drug Discovery. His major achievements include the elaboration of a highly innovative technology to prepare immobilized polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases. The invention has been commercially exploited through a collaboration with Daicel and the resulting materials have become the new gold standard in the field of chromatographic separation of stereoisomers in all laboratories dealing with chiral separations in the industry and academia. He was a pioneer in applying the chiral chromatography technology in life sciences and for the implementation of new preparative chromatographic technologies such as simulated-moving-bed and supercritical fluid chromatography in the pharmaceutical industry. He co-edited a book on ‘Chirality in Drug Research’ and served as the chairman of a number of International Symposia in the field of Preparative Chromatography, Pharmaceutical Analysis (PBA), Chirality (ISCD), and Supercritical Fluid chromatography (SFC).
