“Ghent in top 10 alternative city breaks in Europe”

The Guardian, 2015

The old city of Ghent (in Dutch ‘Gent’, in French ‘Gand’), situated only 40 km from Brussels and the native town of emperor Charles V, is a city of history. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. The impact of this rich past can be clearly seen when viewing, along picturesque canals, the imposing architecture of churches, historical buildings and the houses of rich traders.

The city center is still breathing the atmosphere of a thriving late medieval city state. Ghent is recognized internationally as one of Europe’s greatest discoveries – small enough to feel cosy but big enough to stay vibrant. From St Michael's bridge there is a wonderful view on the skyline of Ghent with the three impressive towers of St Nicholas' Church, the Belfroy with its bell tower and St Bavo's cathedral with the world famous painting "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan van Eyck. Ghent offers also a lot of shops, restaurants and an exciting nightlife.

Ghent university, ranked as a top 100 university, accommodates 41,000 students (click here for movie on Ghent University yesterday, today and tomorrow). As such, the streets of Ghent are filled with young people originating from numerous nationalities. The official language in Ghent is Dutch, but most people also speak English, French and/or German. Ghent is situated in the centre of Europe and other famous historic cities such as Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp, Paris and Amsterdam are within easy reach. The Flemish coast with its sandy beaches and gastronomic restaurants is only 60 km away.

In Ghent, everyone can find something to suit her/his taste and every foreign participant could consider to couple this trip to a number of city trips nearby.
